Section for Medical Biochemistry of the Union of the Pharmaceutical Societies of Yugoslavia is founded on May 15th 1955 in Split. Society for Medical Biochemistry is founded on May 15th 1965 in Banjaluka.

SMBS celebrates May 15th as the Day of the Society.

On May 1971, Society of Medical Biochemists became the 28th member of the International Federation for Clinical Chemistry.

The aim of the SMBS is to gather medical biochemists in order to promote and develop every field of medical biochemistry in the health area. Society's tasks are: to equalize standards of operation in clinical biochemistry laboratories, to provide education for medical biochemists in the broadest terms, to encourage scientific researches, to set the norms in the field of operation, to implement, apply and obey codes of ethics with medical personnel. Established standards in the filed of medical biochemistry are then proposed by SMBS to the appropriate federal and republic institutions. The task of the Society is to provide the exchange of experiences of its members with the members of the familiar organizations in the country and abroad.
